Everything you need to know about 3D files, how to deliver them and how to upload them directly.
What is a 3D file?
A photo or image is plat — It only has width and height. On the other hand, a 3D file describes a digital object with width, height and depth. Imagine turning an object into your hands: that's exactly what a 3D model does, but on your screen.
A 3D printer reads such a file and builds it layer by layer in plastic. That's why you need a 3D file and not a regular photo.
Common formats
How did you get a 3D file?
- Design it yourself — with free software such as Tinkercad, Blender or Fusion 360.
- Download — on websites as Thingiverse, Printables or Cults there are thousands of free and paid designs.
- Have it designed — have an idea but no experience? Request a quote and describe what you need, possibly with a picture or sketch.
How do you deliver files?
Through the price calculator
In our price calculator upload a .stl or .obj file. You can immediately see the price, set and pay for materials and quality. This is the fastest way.
Via a quote request
Do you have a STEP, Fusion 360 or other format? Or do you have no 3D model at all? No problem. Via a quote request we can work with almost any format. Even with a photo or sketch, we can often make an estimate — describe what you need as clearly as possible (dimensions, function, quantity).
Technical requirements
Preferably save your file in millimetres (mm). If that does not work, pay attention to the dimensions in the price calculator or indicate the desired sizes in your quote request.
A closed mesh means that your 3D model has no holes or open edges. Imagine a box: if a side is missing, the printer cannot know what's inside and outside. Our software does some checks, but the best result you get with a clean, closed file.
All parts in your model must be at least 0,4 mm thick, but preferably more (1 mm+). Do you need thinner details? Then a quote is required and we probably recommend a resin print, which can handle much finer details.
