From idea to print
What is a 3D model?
Think of a 3D model as a digital blueprint. While a regular photo only shows what something looks like, a 3D model contains all the information about height, width and depth. This allows a computer to calculate exactly how a printer should build the object layer by layer.
For 3D printing, we usually use a mesh: the surface of the object is made up of many small triangles. The more triangles, the smoother the surface. The model should also be watertight, with no holes or open edges, like a closed shell around the object.

Where can you get a model?
You do not have to make a 3D model yourself. There are four common routes.
Create your own 3D model
CAD software
For technical or functional parts. You design accurately using dimensions and tolerances.
Examples: Fusion 360, FreeCAD, SolidWorks, Onshape
3D modeling
For organic shapes, sculptures and free-form designs. You digitally “sculpt” the model.
Examples: Blender, ZBrush, Nomad Sculpt
Scanning with photos
Turn photos of a real object into a 3D model using an app or software.
Examples: Polycam, Meshroom, RealityCapture
3D scanner
A 3D scanner takes precise measurements of an object and generates a model.

3D scanning & photogrammetry
Already have a physical object? With a 3D scanner or an app on your phone (such as Polycam), you can turn it into a digital model. After any necessary cleanup, you can upload that model to Printics for a price estimate.

Beginners' common errors
Model is not watertight
Open edges or holes in the surface. The slicer then cannot determine what is inside and what is outside.
Incorrect scale
Sometimes a model is in inches instead of millimeters;
Walls too thin
Walls thinner than ±0.8 mm may break during printing or may not print correctly.
Wrong format
FBX and DAE are intended for games and animation, not 3D printing. Export to STL or 3MF.
Not oriented for printing
Overhanging parts greater than ~45° relative to the print bed require support. Sometimes reorienting the model helps.
